QUESTION: Buying A Digital Camera

So, I've asked Santa for a new point-and-shoot digital camera this year. Of course, I need to decide what kind of camera I want so I can send Santa a price & link with online ordering info. What do you suggest I get? I already have a fancy Canon Rebel. I want a pocket-camera I can carry with me more easily, but still get good quality shots.

you cant go wrong with any of the major companies point and shoot digital cameras, they are all pretty comparable and of course price competitive. the best thing to do would be to go into your local electronics store and take the hands on approach to this.
we not only have a large digital slr, but also a small point and shoot and find it is much easier to take on the go, without having to lug around a huge camera. we opted for super durable pentax w90, not the most attractive camera, but on the cheaper end and being that our last camera fell victim to, well, falling & breaking we decided function over fashion. leica makes the best cameras, ever. but their point & shoot cameras are pricey, panasonic partnered with leica on its cameras, so they have some of the great features that leica has, minus the price. give a look see at this camera, it looks like it is factory refurbished but comes with a kit including a 4gb memory card, little tripod etc. and this is probably one of the best places to buy cameras from online, in my opinion

also 95% of people do not need megapixles over 10.

    hope this rambling helps!

  2. Nice response, Scott!

When we got out little camera, we did a ton of research to avoid a few pitfalls that bugged us personally (specifically, purple fringing around high-contrast areas). This is usually fixed by a good lens.

We always go back to this site for reviews...

I've ordered a few things from adorama too.

  3. I've been using the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5. It was one of the more affordable point-and-shoots within its quality range at the time, and I've been pretty happy with it. I've been hearing great things about their newer models in comparison to its Nikon and Canon competitors. This is a review from the same site Alison suggested: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q42010highendcompactgroup/

I'd be interested to see what which camera you choose. It's kinda funny... I was thinking about posting a question about decent mid-line DSLRs.

  4. We got a Lumix DCM-LX5 with Leica lens. Quality photos in a point and shoot. The only thing we don't like about it is the lens cap. http://www.steves-digicams.com/ has excellent reviews for different digital cameras, and they at least used to post sample photos under different light.

  5. Stumbled across your blog. Had to chime in on this question. I agree with the commenter who said go to dpreview.com and compare cameras for what you are looking for.

I don't own a DSLR, I have a Canon SX20 (a larger Super Zoom camera). If I were to get a pocket size camera, I'd get a Canon SX200. It's still considered a Super Zoom, it's just more compact. You'd be amazed at the photos this camera can take! Check out www.bloggingfrombolivia.com She uses a Canon SX200 and people often think she has a DSLR!
